About the author

J.R.R.Tolkien (1892-1973) was a distinguished academic, though he is best known for writing ‘The Hobbit’, ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and ‘The Silmarillion’, plus other stories and essays. His books have been translated into over 40 languages and have sold many millions of copies worldwide.


  • Masterpiece

    This book is something that makes me shiver when I think about it. The Lord of the Rings is a fantasy epic, and J.R.R Tolkien captures the emmense size of this tale spectacularly. It is the rich style of writing, the characters that go on journeys with us. These books are amazing. I would not reccomend trying to multitask reading two books and one of them being Lord of the Rings. You need to be involved right there, and these books are so detailed, so epic, that it is not a great idea to try to multi-read.
  • Ultimate classic.

    This trilogy draws you in and has you enthusiastically reading until the final word. The thought of it consumes you whatever you're doing. Quite like a modern TV series. Always wanting to go back to it to see what happens in the next chapter. That's how I felt reading it the first time in 2002. Since then I have read it once a year just to refresh my memory.

    Hi After been reading this book, I found this book very intriguing, as I kept on reading, it is something about the story that drawn you into the it's storyline. Well that is a positive comment about this book but also there are a negative way too. After experienced reading this book, I discovered it's difficult and confused in terms the Digital Book. It often jump, even if you were just touch one page or a surface of the iPad. My perspective in regards it is not appeared from the book itself but guessing might have been the Apple Technical Issue. It seldom slow to flip through pages and very often jump and shut itself down. Please contact with the Apple about this as I am one of the supportive patron. I would like to see the development on the iBook's apps. (Apps crashed very often). Please take a consideration of this matter as it is highly concern for readers.

    A fantastic work of imagination. Note that in this ibook edition the maps cannot be enlarged however, and are too small to be useful. The kindle edition allows you to enlarge maps as much as is needed.

    The massive scope of this book, and the sheer power in the words never fail to make me stay awake for many hours at night. The passion in and in between every line is just overwhelming, and I stand in awe of Tolkien's skill.

    What an amazing story, the characters are more real and unique then in the screen play, The parts of the story the film missed made the read so much better, from the friendly banter an obvious friendship between the cast to the gripping action. This book has it all, a completely unique world, real people, great description and well hobbits, because who doesn't love a hobbit. Great read and a magical experience.
