  • good story bad writing style

    pretty interesting story, but couldn’t get the style of the author. Thought some of her expressions were not clear, not properly brought out to us.

    Had the potential to be interesting and catchy, ended up being lacklustre, with poor plot and character development - makes the teen vampire craze look like classically written literature. Didn't even make it halfway through before deleting.
  • A bit of a disappointment

    Great first half, second half not so much. Just be warned that the second half gets a little "woman porn" in the second half. I don't hate it with a seething passion, as there are some fresh and redeeming things about it, but be warned that it can be very frustrating at times.

    It took me a few chapters to adjust to the writing style. After that it was an amazing read. I have been to Hong Kong and could relate to it. The cultural aspect is just enough to make you want to research it. The characters all have great depth that draws the reader into the story. Another great Australian author to add to my growing list.

    Don’t listen to those bad-reviews people- this book rocks! As a series they are my favourite books of all time. You can tell that Chan was kind-of teaching herself to write as she went along in this first book, and her story-teling is so rad that she STILL manages to kill it over any other fantasy or action novel I’ve ever read. Picture Lord of the Rings, Matthew Riley and the Matrix combining all their powers into one book. Now picture that book getting the qi kicked out of it by this book. Also, romance.

    I enjoyed the story but was very frustrated with the writing. It seemed overly simple and lacking in observation. See Patrick Rothfuss for great fantasy writing.
  • Knowing when to stop

    The first half or so of this book was intriguing and although it used an unusual style, was quite well written. Then things started to go wrong and went downhill. It felt like the book got out of control. The style slipped, the writing deteriorated, the romance and storyline became ridiculous and it just went on and on and on. The second book was worse.
