In June 2005 four US Navy SEALs left their base in Afghanistan for the Pakistani border. Their mission was to capture or kill a notorious al-Qaeda leader known to be ensconced in a Taliban stronghold surrounded by a small but heavily armed force. Less than twenty-four hours later, only one of those Navy SEALs was alive.

This is the story of team leader Marcus Luttrell, the sole survivor of Operation Redwing. Blasted unconscious by a rocket grenade, blown over a cliff, but still armed and still breathing, Luttrell endured four desperate days fighting the al-Qaeda assassins sent to kill him, before finding unlikely sanctuary with a Pashtun tribe who risked everything to protect him from the circling Taliban killers.

    If you're not an American, you will struggle reading the first chapters. A Texan redneck hating everyone but Americans. I stopped reading after the first quarter. I agree what he had was a struggle but, my god, there are places out there outside Texas!!

    Petty officer Luttrell is a remarkably lucky young man. The onslaught he faced, coupled with the unforgiving terrain would surely have killed a lesser trained and dedicated person. His luck persisted when he met people of honour and courage. Luttrell often blames the "liberal" press and politicians of his homeland for some of the dangers he and his comrades faced. But it is the ability to have a country where all get their say that he is fighting for. Once again it is disappointing to read of a covert mission doomed so early in its undertaking. When will Western forces learn about eastern herdsmen and their wandering ways?

    This is such an incredible true story. The detail that Marcus luttrell goes into is unreal. A truly amazing experience to read and understand what our troops are willing to go through for our country and our own freedom. I hope that no one else has to go through such pain suffering and loss. Great book!!!!
