About the author

J.R.R.Tolkien (1892-1973) was a distinguished academic, though he is best known for writing The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion, plus other stories and essays. His books have been translated into over 50 languages and have sold many millions of copies worldwide.


  • Great story, some flaws in digital version text

    A great book and one that is currently enthralling a 4 year old girl with its tales of dwarves and dragons and treasure. However, I am finding it rather frustrating that the correct accents are not present, for example "Oín" is written “Oin”. It’s a small thing but when you know the correct usage of the accents and know they are meant to be present, pronunciation whilst reading aloud is an effort of memory rather than simply reading. Given that it is a digital version I can’t see any reason why the names of places and things can’t be written exactly as Tolkien did, especially as all the ‘alternative’ characters used in the text are still common and in all standard text packages. I held off on buying the Lord of the Rings in digital form until I could check if the same is true - that tome would be vastly more frustrating to read as a fan if the accents were not present! Outside of that, the included artwork is a nice bonus, as are the audio recordings of Tolkien singing the songs. I would recommend spending the extra dollar for this version over the standard one as it seems to be worth it!

    After reading the Lord of The Rings trilogy, I decided to read this book. The trilogy had already raised my expectations of the book and it didn't disappoint!!!! Plus it's good preparation for the realism of the movie, The Hobbit
  • Excellently presented iBook

    Faithfully worded, with pix and maps, sound bites by jRRT x2, chapter layouts so as to feel like you are reading a book. Bonus chapter 1 of LOTR. Would have liked pix and map to enlarge by swipe as a bit small on iPhone. Worth the cost for this "enhanced" app. Buy the book but get this app also.

    I cannot stress enough the charm and literary genius that is in this book. This book is timeless and to be enjoyed by anyone of any age (specifically children) with a terrific journey and fantastic climax it is well meant for reading aloud to children as they lay in bed.

    I read this book before the lord of the rings was a movie.... If you loved that, you have to read this, as it's the start, such a great book LOVE IT :)
