On 4 November 2010, a flight from Singapore to Sydney came within a knife edge of being one of the world's worst air disasters. Shortly after leaving Changi Airport, an explosion shattered Engine 2 of Qantas flight QF32 - an Airbus A380, the largest and most advanced passenger plane ever built. Hundreds of pieces of shrapnel ripped through the wing and fuselage, creating chaos as vital flight systems and back-ups were destroyed or degraded.
In other hands, the plane might have been lost with all 469 people on board, but a supremely experienced flight crew, led by Captain Richard Champion de Crespigny, managed to land the crippled aircraft and safely disembark the passengers after hours of nerve-racking effort.

    Wow!! All the things that happen behind those closed doors. I'm a nervous flyer. This book has dispelled pretty well all of my fears. If all pilots and crew have 20% of the capabilities the personnel on this plane had I will be much happier. This is book that is hard to stop. You always want to find out what is going to happen next. Well done. Dave Measor

    I have read this book 3 times. A great read and attention to detail is 2nd to none. For people who fly regularly the security and confidence in the training that pilots do is amazing. You hear comments that the pilot just sits there and the plane flies itself well here is an example of a pilot who is a pilot. A true judge of a person is when out of their comfort zone, I don't think Richard ever was I have flown 380,s with 3 different airlines and perfect flights. However if was a problem I would that Richard was the captain.

    Incredible account of a terrifying experience handled brilliantly by a team of pros led by an extraordinary man. I flew as a passenger with Richard not too long after the event. He stopped by pre landing and took time to talk with my 4yo son about flying - and gave us a glimpse of the cockpit on our way out. So obviously passionate about his craft. We later sent him some photos and he sent our son an amazing book. Wonderful man who will be remembered fondly by history. Amazing story. P

    As a pilot, this was truly captivating not only from an aviation perspective. The life lessons learnt, the team work and professionalism that must have been accomplished for the successful outcome of the flight were to a standard second to none. It is a fantastic read, this is the first novel I have EVER read as I don't believe in reading anything that doesn't benefit me in anyway and have stuck solely to text books, from the first page to the last this book has changes the way I will perform on a day to day basis, with life, career etc.... Congrats to the whole QF32 team

    I enjoyed this very exciting account of a terrifying air event. I finished reading it with my confidence reinforced that the people who fly with Qantas are of the highest caliber. It was very truthful to a fault and gave a rare view of a real time emergency in the cockpit.

    This book is one of the most awe inspiring reads of my life. As a former light aircraft pilot who only flys with Qantas anywhere, this book confirms my determination to only fly with the worlds no.1 airline! Moreover it cements in my mind that any flight to the UK will be in the A380! The USA has "Sully" Sullenberger but we have Rich de Crespigny ( did I spell that correctly?) It is pilots like the him and the crew of that QF32 who make us all proud an feel safe each time we fly Qantas. Well done and thanks for this book Richard - just brilliant! Sean McCartney Qld
