Werner is a German orphan, destined to labour in the same mine that claimed his father’s life, until he discovers a knack for engineering. His talent wins him a place at a brutal military academy, but his way out of obscurity is built on suffering.

At the same time, far away in a walled city by the sea, an old man discovers new worlds without ever setting foot outside his home. But all around him, impending danger closes in.

About the author

Anthony Doerr is the author of four books, The Shell Collector, About Grace, Four Seasons in Rome and Memory Wall. Doerr's short fiction has won three O. Henry Prizes and has been anthologized in The Best American Short Stories, The Anchor Book of New American Short Stories, and The Scribner Anthology of Contemporary Fiction. He has won the Rome Prize, and shared the New York Public Library's Young Lions Fiction Award with Jonathan Safran Foer. In 2007 Granta placed Doerr on its list of the "21 Best Young American novelists." Doerr lives in Boise, Idaho, with his wife and two sons.

    WONDERFUL! I was a bit reluctant to read this book because I thought it might be soppy. Boy was I wrong. It's really well written and the characters are great. I was so swept up in the story I read it in a few days but didn't want it to end.

    Read this book! It's beautifully written and the story itself, set at the end of world war 2 with some wonderful characters, ensures this book is a page turner. Best book I've read in ages, will be reading it again soon.

    Having read this amazing book, I was tempted to begin reading it again immediately, but I am holding off to give the story a chance to percolate down through my subconscious. Every page resonates with beautiful writing, great story telling, believable characters, and a wonderful sense of place. I suspect that 'All The Light We Cannot See' will do for Saint-Malo, France, what John Berendt’s ‘Midnight In The Garden of Good And Evil’ did for Savannah, Georgia. Quite frankly I can’t understand why anyone would give this book anything less than four stars. If I could give it more than five I would.
