Six months ago, Harry Bosch left the LAPD before they could fire him, and then hired his half-brother, the maverick Defence Attorney Mickey Haller to sue the department for forcing him out. Although it wasn't the way he wanted to go, Bosch has to admit that being out of the game has its benefits.

Until Mickey asks him to help on one of his cases, and suddenly Harry is back where he belongs, right in the centre of a particularly puzzling murder mystery. The difference is, this time Bosch is working for the defence, aiming to prevent the accused, Leland Foster, from being convicted. And not only does the prosecution seem to have a cast-iron case, but having crossed over to 'the dark side' as his former colleagues would put it, Bosch is in danger of betraying the very principles he's lived by his whole career.

With the secret help of his former LAPD partner Lucia Soto, he turns the investigation inside the police department. But as Bosch gets closer to discovering the truth, he makes himself a target.


  • Connelly has written better.

    Before I read to half way I thought that maybe Connelly had a ghost writer. This novel did not read with the same whip smart dialogue & he is consistently repetitive throughout the book, which I found personally frustrating. This is not to say it was awful but I was disappointed, it's a mediocre read. Maybe he is losing his touch, let's hope not.

    In Michael Connelly we have an author who makes you believe that what you are reading really could and does happen. Nothing is too far fetched and the characters are from real life. Only complaint is that the book was too short. I like to take several days over a novel but finished this one in 36 hours!

    ...or perhaps ever. A stunning return to form after the disappointing Burning Room. Even better than recent successes The Black Box and the Gods of Guilt; right up there with the classics, like The Black Ice, The Last Coyote and Blood Work. Real emotional depth, and a lovingly crafted and relentlessly compelling plot - despite the early revelation of the extremely dangerous killers - which makes this work even more of a milestone. An excellent journey and outcome for Harry. If this doesn't land all of the top awards, the judges need changing.

    5 stars is not enough. This has been another great read from Michael Connelly. Can't wait for the next Harry Bosch novel.
